Another good weekend.
Sometimes there's something to be said about getting away, even if it is a three hour jaunt to my aunt and uncle's house. They happen to live on a farm with two ponds right at the house. The "low" pond is the one right behind their house and about three acres in size, while the "high" pond is the one up the hill and probably about twice as big as the low pond.
I spent Friday night at the ball park, and we dropped a nailbiter, 29-28. Three errors by our first baseman, plus some untimely walks, cost us. It's okay, because we're still not full strength. We'll get closer as one of our regulars will be back on Wednesday I hope. I went 3-5 at the dish with two singles and a triple.
Saturday rolled around and I got up fairly early so I could pack for the trip. I also cleaned out my exploder so we had room. With golf clubs, a trolling motor, 3 bags, some food, fishing rods and tackle boxes, we were pretty loaded. We stopped for lunch at one of the most expensive truck stops I've ever eaten at. After the lunch, we continued to John and Lori's.
We got to their house around 1:30. After unpacking, Dad and I, put on fishing clothes and headed to the pond. It was still as clear as it was two weeks ago, but there might have been more moss. We fished all around the pond, catching hundreds of little bass. I did catch one of the nicer ones that measured about 17 inches. I screwed up as I had a monster on that broke me off right by the boat. Mom and my cousin Steph actually joined us in that boat and that was an adventure. The little boat was definitely crowded. We fished for a while longer before those two got cold. It wasn't exactly hot out and there was a pretty fair breeze from the south. I told Dad that it was time to go to the high pond to fish for channel cats. He agreed and John came and joined us. After a couple of hours we had 7 or 8 healthy channels with two caught by dad that went between 8-10 lbs.
I spent about an hour cleaning fish. I was finally able to take a shower and relax as we ate supper. After supper, we lounged around and decided to play golf the next day.
Sunday, we did play golf. John, Dad, Steph and I. I struggled but still shot 85. After golf it was back to the pond. Dad, John and Steph went in the boat in the low pond, while I went back to the mudhole known as the top pond. I caught 3 bullheads, 2 snapping turtles and 2 big channels that would probably go 8-10 lbs each. Those I put in the low pond. After a shower and supper, we played poker, and followed that with a game of Oh Hell.
This morning it was on the water by 8:30. We fished in the boat until almost noon. I caught a monster bass probably going about 5 lbs and just full of eggs. I also had two other healthy ones too. It's kind of nice not to have access to any technology up there. Granted we're only five miles west of Beatrice, NE, but my cell phone doesn't even get service.
It was a great weekend.
If I hadn't been pissed, it might have been different

It has begun
Our men's league here in town kicked off tonight. We opened with the two-time defending champion team Wray Roofing. The lineup we fielded was pretty makeshift as the normal shortstop and two outfielders were gone, so I was a little concerned.
We were slated to start at 6:30. At 6:25, it was shaping up to be a beautiful evening with no wind and temps in the mid 70's. At 6:27, it was blowing from the north around 30 m.p.h. How much do I love the gust front in kansas? So now I have to battle the wind because on our field you're pitching into the wind. I was also nervous for some reason so I promptly walked the first two batters.
We ended up getting out of the inning only giving up three runs. Of course we started out like we were swinging limp noodles and went down in order.
In the top of the second, we held them scoreless, but managed to manufacture two runs to cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Both teams went down in order in the third. Thanks to some incredibly skillless picthing by me, they jacked three out and took an 11-2 lead after three and a half. We scored 6 on some base hits and a couple of errors to cut it to 11-8 after four. in the fifth, they scored 6 more to take a 17-8 lead. Our offense disappeared but our defense stayed strong.
The score still stood at 17-8 after five and a half innings. The bottom of the sixth was like the dam bursting. Koehn walked. Dibbens then singled Koehn to second. Brian came up and blasted one into the park behind right center. Chris N. followed up Brian's shot with a blast to left center. I singled and then was moved to second on Keith's single. Gillespe came up and looped one that scored me. Somewhere in there, we made an out. I think it was Ensy. Anyways, we went through the lineup again, with the bases juiced when Chris N. hit one down the street. Again, i singled and scored. We ended up dropping FOURTEEN runs on them to take a 22-17 lead.
Now, with all of our luck, I figured a collapse was going to happen. It didn't. We faced four batters and had three of them fly out. Booyah!! I was almost dancing because I had never beaten that team, and they had talked a bunch of shit before the season began.
So we're in uncharted waters as we're 1-0 on the young season. I can't wait for Friday.
good weekend of hecticness
I'm tired. And what's up with this 15.3 point font for the typing of a blog? Anyways, if this is a sign of things to come for the weekends ahead, sign me up. It was a good mix of busy, heat, and lots of lots of fun.
We were signed up for the 4 man scramble golf tourney this weekend. In case you didn't know, a scramble is a format in which each player hits a shot. Then you choose the best shot and all four hit from that spot and continue on until you put the ball in the hole. The team consisted of our three core members of Timmy, Chris and myself. Our normal fourth Jyo, is tanning down in Costa Rica. Anyways, Chris had a buddy who filled in. He was a perfect compliment to our team. Anyways, we were rather bummed because there were only nine teams in this tourney. Pretty sucky turnout, but we said, we'll go ahead and play anyways.
We knew that there would be a couple of teams in the mid to upper 50's in score so we were hoping that there would be two flights. We ended up shooting 63 (8 under par) and we were undecided about our chances because we thought we could be either the tail end of championship flight and be royally screwed or we could be towards the front of first flight. We got to the clubhouse and saw that our 63 was rather low compared with the other scores. At that point we were starting to be dejected about our score. However, the remaing five groups all came in under us by at least 3 strokes.
So after the golf in the heat, (98 degrees in May is flat out scorching) I went to softball practice while already sporting a sunburn. Only five of us showed up and we took some cuts because our first game is Wednesday. After about an hour and a half of that, I decided it was time to shower. Back to the house I went, after running an errand to take Mindy's dog out to where the horses were. I finally got showered and loaded up the Exploder with the stuff for the cookout where the riders were headed. We had a good time at the retreat center but our food (mainly the taters) didn't get quite done, but I learned a little bit about cooking the hobo dinners. We also fished until the lightning cut that out right before dark. I came home and was almost dead on my feet. So I went to bed at 11 because we had the second day of the tourney at 8.
Today we went in leading our flight by 3 strokes. We ended up shooting 61 (10 under par) and running away with the first flight money by 10 strokes of our nearest competitor. With about four holes left we realized that we could be shooting too low, so we started dicking around. On one hole we all hit 7 irons with no chance to even put it on the green. We were laughing and having a good time. After we finished up by receiving our prize money, I came home. We ended up running down to Walmart for some stuff, mainly allergy meds for me and some food. I snuck a quick nap in before our softball game this evening. We got beat 10-8 while minus some of our better players. I was probably on the verge of dehydration/overheating before I took a shower. Two 32 oz. bottles of Powerade helped though.
If this is what's going to happen for all of my summer weekends, I'm golden. Bring it the heck on, and let's Git-R-Dun!!
It's been a while pt. 2
I seem to be slacking in my posting as of late. Things have been busy as I get geared up for summer. Our co-ed team actually played our first game on Sunday. We managed to squander a 17-4 lead and lost 19-18 in extra innings. I shoulder the blame a little bit because I let Mindy pitch too long. She had trouble finding the strike zone especially with the guy batters.
In this league, a walk to a guy means the guy gets second, and the girl behind him takes first. It's a good rule because it forces you to pitch to everyone. Anyways, she had a problem and we put our sticks up when we needed them most. No one really hit well except me as I went 3-4, two singles and a triple with 4 RBI. The ump also blew a call where I made a double play at third, but she said the ball hit the base runner in foul territory. I wish I could see a replay of that because i think it hit her while she was standing on the bag. Technically she is safe. However, I jumped on the ball, made the force at third and tagged her for a double play. I didn't really bitch and moan because I wasn't sure about everything.
Currently we're struggling to find a couple of female subs for Sunday afternoon. People are gone/working and it just didn't gel. Not a big deal because I think I can find a couple of subs by then.
Anyways, I just finished up running, so I think i had better hit the showers so i can play golf tomorrow.
I couldn't believe it
I don't remember ever posting what my mexican name is. Hmm, who could have done that? Oh, that's right. I know. One of my former friends.
Becka, you're going to get it.

I have been slacking.
I admit it.
I have been slacking off in my posts as of late. I won't deny it, I will fess up like a champ.
That's how it goes sometimes. Finals are done so I'm ready to let loose. First thing i'm going to do? Head to Nebraska tomorrow for a graduation. The other thing that has been keeping me busy has been getting things together for co-ed softball. I'm excited to play because we will have a blast. Thankfully we are playing in the rec league since we've got a bunch of people who haven't played in EONS.
The hardest thing about it has been trying to figure out where to play everyone. Right now our lineup goes:
Mindy P
Luke RC
Kelli LC
Me L
Ashley 2B
Marcos SS
Jennifer 3B
Nik 1B
Jackie R
Jarrett C
However, things may change as we might go with three guys in the OF and let Jackie catch. I wouldn't mind playing 2B or 3B just to see if I could do it, but I do like it in the OF. Hitting four hole may be a bit of an adventure but I've been hitting to all fields as of late.
Oh the team name you may ask? The Fighting Javelinas. That's right. We're named after wild pigs.
It's going to be a good time.

I'm still sore
from the weekend.
I guess playing five games of softball before being in full game shape will do that to a person.
We partook in a tournament and our first game was Saturday at 9 a.m. After the first game I was worried that it was going to turn into one of our typical tourney flops as we got flat drilled 23-6. There were some grumblings that this team had yet to win a tournament game of any kind but as I watched our next opponents warm up, I knew that we were going to win.
They were awful in warmups.
They were worse in the game.
For some reason, they hit a fastpitch bat weighing only about 22 oz. That sucker had to be hollow because it rang with a loud ping whenever contact was made. But there was absolutely no pop to it whatsoever. Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. One of their first batters tried to rip a line drive, but coming off of that bat was nothing more than a floater that confused our shortstop as it was coming at him so slow. Needless to say we won, and won big 26-0.
After an hour break, we faced off with the team that had smoked us. However, they had been parked in the parking lot partaking in the beer drinking. We came out with a renewed vigor and traded runs back and forth until we came to the bottom of the last inning with the score tied at 9-9. Our first batter ripped a line drive and with his speed turned it into a triple. So now the winning run is standing on third with none out.
The team promptly walks our next two hitters to get to me. I'm not sure what they thought I was going to do as I had been stroking the ball rather well.
I came up to the plate and the first pitch he threw me was a bit inside but a strike none the less. I smashed a laser down the third base line between the third baseman and the bag. Bases clearing double. Game over. Revenge is always sweet.
Our next game was another route. This time I decided I was going to pitch and we won 24-4.
The championship game was a different story. In the third innning, I led off with a single and then advanced on a single. Two on, none out. Our next batter flies out and Adam and I can't advance. Casey comes up and hits a grounder deep in the hole behind second. Somehow the second baseman knocks it down and flips it to the shortstop who is clearly standing about a foot away from the bag. The ump calls the out and the shortstop even admits he wasn't anywhere close to the bag. Now we've got runners at the corners with two outs. JP comes up and hits a hard grounder to short who fires a throw to first. JP was a step past the bag when the ump calls him out.
Bad calls on both parts and our team nearly lost their heads. We were down by one 15-14 heading into the bottom of the 6th. At that point, we suffered another collapse and they scored 5 to take a 20-14 lead into the top of the 7th. We didn't give up and we scored five but it wasn't enough as those bad calls ended up biting us in the butt as we lost 20-19.Oh well, it happens.
Personally, I hit the snot out of the ball. By my count I was 11-18 during the action, but Ko swears we got more at bats. We may have, but I'll stay satisfied with a .611 average. I think I'm ready for Riverfest this weekend.
I headed to Jar's after the tourney only to find them ready to practice for our co-ed team. I called Mindy and we all went to the ball diamond and spent an hour or so taking turns hitting.
Sunday rolled around and I could barely roll out of bed. I had muscles I had forgotten about that were sore. I hobbled like an arthitec old man for about an hour until my phone rang. Mindy was calling wondering if we were going to get together and hit again. I called Jar and Jen and then made a call to Marcos and Jackie.
All six of us got together at 4 and next thing I knew, it was 6:45. We had a ball practicing and I can already tell that we'll have a ton of fun playing co-ed softball. I have a feeling that a quick emergency trip to Wichita will be in action to get balls to play with for the co-ed team.
As I look on it, I really am a softball whore.
